South Park

The South Park neighborhood in Charlotte, NC is a hub for activity in South Charlotte. Located around SouthPark Mall, the area Charlotteans call “South Park” is comprised of the surrounding neighborhoods.

Shopping and Attractions

SouthPark Mall was originally built in 1970 and later went through two major expansions. It is now home to major retailers you would expect in a shopping mall, as well as high design stores like Porsche Design, Louis Vuitton, Lacoste, and Tiffany & Co. It is anchored by stores like Nordstrom’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Belk’s, and Crate & Barrel. SouthPark Mall is the largest shopping mall in North or South Carolina and is one of the most profitable, meaning retailers are willing to invest in high quality, leading edge shopping experiences. It is its own Charlotte attraction.

The South Park area of South Charlotte has more to offer than just one mall. The area centered around the intersection of Sharon Road and Fairview Road is also home to Sharon Corners, with local establishments and eateries, and the popular Phillips Place mixed development community, with its own movie theater, upscale dinning, Dean & Deluca, Restoration Hardware, and Whole Foods.

Down the road, tucked between Morrison Boulevard and picturesque Colony Road, you’ll find more shopping centered around Earth Fare and the Harris Teeter grocery stores (sometimes referred to as the “Taj MaTeeter” because of its size and selection). This part of South Park is also proud to have one of the nicest public libraries in Charlotte.

Symphony Park, located along Barclay Downs has a large pond and is home to the Charlotte Symphony’s Summer Pops series, where many locals enjoy the music with a picnic on a blanket or low chair. When the weather is nice, you can also find outdoor movies, Great Grapes festival and the newly established Beer, Bourbon, and BBQ festival. South Park has a lot to offer!

Eating

The South Park area in Charlotte is home to a number of upscale restaurants you’ll enjoy.

Many locals are fans of the European inspired George’s Brasserie, Brio Tuscan Grill, Toscana, and Cafe Monte.

American establishments include the popular Rooster’s Wood-Fired Kitchen, McCormick & Scmicks, Wolfgang Puck Pizza Bar, California Pizza Kitchen, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, and Dean & Deluca.

For the adventurous eater, try Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar, Paco’s Tacos and Tequila, Chuy’s Tex, Yama Asian Fusion, and Baku Japanese.

There are also a dizzying number of mid-priced to budget oriented food selections from P.F. Chang’s to Chipoltle to Burger King. I could eat in South Park every day and never get tired!

Living

As you might imagine with a lengthy history and so much to offer, the South Park area of Charlotte has a variety of options for you to call home. South Park real estate is walkable to people lucky enough to live in the surrounding luxury condominiums and mid-priced apartments. The surrounding neighborhoods of Barclay Downs, Foxcroft, Mountainbrook, and the area reaching down to Quail Hollow each have their own unique feeling. You could find a mid-priced house under 2,000 square feet in this area built in the 60’s or a bespoke custom home over 6,000 square feet priced in the millions.

The South Park area is generally bound by Park Road on the West and on the East by Providence Road and Carmel Road. It stretches as far South as Gleneagles Road and Quail Hollow Road and as far North as Runnymede Lane and Wendover Road.
