Neighborhood Spotlight: Montford Park

The newly christened neighborhood Montford Park is nestled between Madison Park and Myers Park south of Uptown between Park Road and Selwyn Road.  Bustling development is going on in this area primarily centered around shopping and entertainment, which is currently known for two things: Park Road Shopping Center and Montford Drive.

Park Road Shopping Center, a Charlotte landmark established in 1956, has absolutely everything you could need, including a large Harris Teeter, multiple restaurants, a movie theater, and Park Road Books, which hosts monthly book clubs in various genres.

Blackhawk Hardware is a Charlotte institution; one 14-year employee jokingly told me it was a Mecklenburg County law that you needed to visit at least once a week. Inside the massive store you’ll find much more than just hardware—if you go to Lowe’s or Home Depot, you wouldn’t find a greeting card section or an aisle dedicated to pet supplies.  However, if you need to buy just one screw, there’s a section that contains every make and size you could ever need. Blackhawk Hardware has the friendliest staff in Charlotte, and you can get fresh, free popcorn any time of the day.

Montford Drive is a small side street with a thriving night scene—you can do a Google search on “Montford Drive Bar Crawl” and plan out your entire Saturday night if that’s the way you roll! If you’re looking for something a little more low-key, there are many fantastic restaurants, including The Roasting Company and Good Food on Montford, and a circa-1958 bowling alley, Park Lanes. Does your doggie need day care while you work during the week? Check out the Barker Lounge, which also offers boarding, grooming, and training.

New development is springing up all over the place, including restaurants, yoga and cycle studios, and a brand new Amelie’s Bakery.  If you do one thing in Charlotte, stop in at any of the four Amelie’s locations and have a salted caramel brownie.

Not wanting to be confused with the established neighborhoods of Madison Park and Myers Park, the neighbors in this slice of town recently voted to create their own identity with the name Montford Park.  On side streets off Park Road and Selwyn Road you’ll find mostly bungalows and mid-century modern ranches built in the 1950s on lots that are a little over a quarter of an acre.  The streets of this established neighborhood are tree-lined and bordered with well-manicured lawns.

In short, Montford Park is one of my favorite areas of Charlotte, a convenient, walkable community with a secure place in Charlotte history and a short drive to SouthPark and Uptown.
